Wilson Ortiz

"My photography is movement, color, light, and transmutation."

Wilson Ortiz is a freelance photographer originally from Colombia. His creations stand out for their vibrant combination of bold colors and dynamic shapes, brought to life through his creative and nonconformist perspective.
With a masterful use of light and shadow, Wilson crafts evocative, emotionally charged images, constantly seeking new challenges and artistic expressions. His works emerge from a deeply personal creative process, beginning in his imagination and materializing through the lens of his camera.

Wilson has exhibited his art in numerous galleries across cities such as Munich, Florence, Rome, Turin, Venice, Cervia, Monza, and New York.

Born in Cali, Valle, Colombia, in 1979, Wilson Hamir Aguirre Ortiz had an early introduction to creativity. He attended a private Catholic school where he earned technical qualifications. At the age of 17, he moved with his family to London in 1996. There, he spent two years at Kingsway College, learning English and studying various subjects. In 1998, he relocated to Munich with his Italian wife, where he currently resides.

Living in Munich, Wilson embraced the proximity to Italy and immersed himself in its culture and traditions. Inspired by his wife’s heritage, he found a deep connection to the country’s history and architecture, which sparked his artistic curiosity. He learned Italian, frequently traveled to Italy, and, in 2006, proudly obtained Italian citizenship.

From a young age, Wilson showed a passion for drawing and painting, instilled in him by his mother. His creative journey began in Munich, where he studied graphic and multimedia design. This led him to explore the digital world, mastering tools like Photoshop while working for German companies and photographers.

Wilson enthusiastically embraced the transition to digital photography, drawn by its innovative potential. A German photographer introduced him to the art form, which quickly evolved from a casual interest to a dedicated profession. In 2006, he began a rigorous self-taught journey, specializing in commercial, fashion, architectural, and portrait photography.

While Wilson is calm by nature, his creative mind is constantly active, driving him to experiment with various aspects of photography, video, multimedia, 3D animation and AI. He honed his expertise in lighting, which he considers the cornerstone of his work, intertwining it with his exploration of color. Simultaneously, he ventured into analog photography, experimenting with retro cameras like the Hasselblad 500CM and developing his own negatives—a process he describes as meditative.

His artistic evolution is marked by an ongoing search for meaning and expression. Wilson's journey as an artist began in Las Vegas in 2009, where he experimented with long exposures and image combinations using his Nikon camera. This moment sparked a profound curiosity and commitment to photography as an art form.

Through his work, Wilson discovered that the interplay of movement and light stirred something extraordinary within him. Over the past 16 years, he has dedicated himself to continuous learning, embracing imperfection as a source of beauty and intrigue. For Wilson, it is within the imperfect that the most compelling and unique moments are found.

In his early exhibitions, he noticed the positive and curious reactions of viewers to his art. This fueled his passion for artistic exploration and his commitment to daily growth. Today, Wilson remains devoted to honing his craft, always striving to find the perfect line and color within imperfection, and to inspire others with his vision.
